Abstract

Aim: A retrospective study was performed to evaluate the place of pediatric surgical experimental studies perfomed in our country in international literature.

Material and Method: The experimental studies performed by Turkish pediatric surgeons which were published in Science Citation Index (SCI) / SCI-Expanded indexed journals between 1980-2008 were evuluated for experimental topics and distribution among years and journals.

Results: In the above mentioned time period, pediatric surgeons in our country published 1020 clinical and experimental studies totally in Science Citation Index (SCI) / SCIExpanded indexed journals. Experimental studies were 264 (% 25.8) of them. When distribution over the years were evaluated, 3 studies were published between 1980-1990, 45 were between 1991-2000 and 219 were between 2001-2008. Among these studies, 76 (% 28.7) of them were published in Journal of Pediatric Surgery, 39 (% 14.7) of them were in Pediatric Surgery International and 33 (% 12.5) of them were in European Journal of Pediatric Surgery and 116 (% 43.9) of them were published in other journals. The most common published experimental models were genitourinary (n:78, % 29.5), ischemia-reperfusion (n:61, % 23.1), gastrointestinal (n.58, % 21.9), newborn (n:28, % 10.6), hepatobiliary (n:9, % 3.4), trauma and shock (n:8, % 3.03) and other models (n.22, % 8.3) respectively.

Conclusion: The number of experimental studies performed in our country in the field of pediatric surgery and their publication in SCI indexed journals have been improved over the recent years. The publication of these experimental studies performed in our country in different pediatric surgery journals can be considered as an important contribution to international literature.
