Abstract

Contrast enema is the primary diagnostic method for Hirschsprung disease (HD). However, it alone is not reliable enough for the diagnosis of HD. The method has some limitations in detecting HD in the first month of life and in diagnosing long segment or total colonic aganglionosis. Contrast enema may be more helpful to predict the proximal level of the aganglionic segment, so that it facilitates the surgical planning, rather than diagnosing the disease, and moreover it may be useful in the differential diagnosis of HD.
