Abstract

Laparoscopic splenectomy in pediatric patients was first described in 1993. It then rapidly gained popularity, thanks to small size of the incisions, excellent cosmetic results, fast and painless postoperative recovery, short hospital stay, fast recovery of postoperative pulmonary and intestinal functions and reduced postoperative complications in both early and late phases. Laparoscopic splenectomy has become now a gold standard surgical procedure in pediatric age group diseases which required splenectomy. Problems experienced at the beginning of laparoscopy are rapidly overcome during the learning process. On the other hand mean operation time shortens with experience. In this paper, we discuss the advantages of laparoscopic splenectomy and our own surgical technique.
