Abstract

Survival in childhood malignancies has been increased nowadays thanks to adoption of multidisciplinary approach, in addition to inclusion of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy in treatment protocols. Since treatment protocols have been started to be planned according to risk groups, requirement for biopsy, and importance of histologic diagnosis have increased. Biopsy should not only be considered as a diagnostic tool. Biopsy is very important in the determination of metastasis and investigaion of the presence of living tumor cells in the residual tissue. It is clinically important to get enough amount of sample from the exact location of tumor using a minimally invasive way. The biopsy techniques can be enumerated as fine needle aspiration biopsy, core-needle (tru-cut) biopsy, minimally invasive surgery and incisional open biopsy.
