Abstract

While initial reports indicated higher incidence of malignant tumors among pediatric testicular tumors, benign characteristics of substantial part of all prepubertal testicular tumors have been recently recognized. Testis-sparing surgery can be used for benign testicular tumors in cases where preoperative investigation can be performed in detail, and frozensection biopsy material can be evaluated. Radical inguinal orchiectomy is the most valid surgical approach for malignant tumors. However retroperitoneal lymph node dissection should be individualized for selective cases, and its decision should be based on the stage, tumor markers, response to chemotherapy, and the results of computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. In general, the prognosis of testicular malignant tumors in children is promising.
