Abstract

Bezoar is formed as a result of the accumulation of indigestible objects in the gastrointestinal system. It is an uncommon reason for abdominal pain. A case with gastric trichobezoar found while examining the reason for chronic abdominal pain has been reported.

A 14-year-old female patient was admitted to hospital intermittently for one year with a complaint of left upper quadrant pain. The patient who had trichophagy was found to have a palpable mass in her left upper abdominal quadrant during her physical examination. Abdominal CT showed a lesion that filled the stomach lumen. A thrichobezoar ball weighing one kilogram of was taken out from the stomach of the patient who underwent anterior gasrotomy. The patient’s psychiatric examination showed mental retardation. During follow-up, abdominal pain did not relapse.

In patients who come to a hospital with a complaint of chronic abdominal pain and who are thought to have mental problems, trichobezoar should be also considered among the etiological factors.
