Abstract

Aim: In this study, we report our experience with endoscopic surgery of the diaphragm in children.

Material and Method: Between years 2002-2006, 7 children underwent endoscopic procedures for diaphragmatic pathologies in our instution. The mean age of the patients was 1.3 years (6 days-3 years). The pathologies were; diaphragmatic eventration in 3, Bochdalec hernia in 1 and Morgagni hernia in 3 patients.

Results: A thoracoscopic approach via 3 ports was used for patients with Bochdalec hernia and diaphragmatic eventration while a laparoscopic repair was performed in patients with Morgagni hernias. The only complication was suturing a colonic segment under the diaphragm during a plication procedure which was treated by laparoscopy. No other intra or postoperative complications was encountered.

Conclusion: Endoscopic procedures can be used in children with diaphragmatic pathologies. However, the risk of suturing the structures under the diaphragm should always be kept in mind.
