Abstract

Aim: Recently studies reported that mode of delivery, timing of operation and surgery technique effects morbidity and length of hospital stay. In our preliminary study, we evaluated clinical outcomes and possible benefits of smallvolume EEN newborns with gastroschisis.

Material and Method: Early enteral feeding was performedi the patients was operated due to gastroshisis since 2001. Two patients were excluded. Because of one patient was required mechanical ventilation due to major cardiac anomalies and another one patinet with intestinal atresia and developed perforation in reduction. A total of 11 patients with gastroschisis were performed early enteral feeding after 12-24 hours following closure of defect.

Results: There were 7 boys and 4 girls with a mean gestational age 36 and mean birth weight 2454 gr. Bianchi procedure was performed in the first thirty minutes following delivery. Mean duration of nasogastric tube was 8.1 days, mean day of total parenteral nutrition was 9.72, mean hospital stay was 15.8 days. One baby was reoperated because of adhesions. There were no complications relevant to early enteral nutrition.

Conclussion: We suggested early enteral feeding as trophic feeding decrease duration of hospital and reduces morbidity in neonates with gastroschisis.
