Abstract

Objective: Hemorrhoids are rarely seen in the pediatric age group. Its incidence is higher in adolescence. The most common complaints are bleeding, swelling, and pain. There are three types of hemorrhoid-internal, external and mixed. Especially external hemorrhoids are very painfuıl. Conservative treatment is applied in the early stages, and surgical treatment at advanced stages or in cases that do not respond to medical treatment. We have shared our cases presenting to our pediatric surgery polyclinic with complaints of hemorrhoids where their treatments were

Method: Thirty-eight patients aged 5-17 years (mean 14.87) presenting to the Health Sciences University, Haseki Training and Research Hospital Pediatric Surgery Polyclinic between January 2017 and January 2019 with complaints of ‘hemorrhoids’ or ‘a swelling in my anus’, and diagnosed following medical examination were examined retrospectively.

Results: Twenty-four patients (63%) were boys and 14 (37%) were girls. Internal hemorrhoid was present in 23 patients, and external hemorrhoids (thrombosed hemorrhoids in 10) in 15 patients. Accompanying anal fissure was present in six patients. Sitz bath and local treatment were applied in all cases, and dietary advice was given. All patients were followed-up for 3-6 months. Both complaints and findings improved in all but four patients. The four patients whose complaints improved but whose findings persisted are still being followed-up.

Conclusion: Hemorrhoids are not a disease unique to adults. They can also be seen in childhood, particularly in adolescence. Surgical intervention is rarely required in children. All our patients improved with conservative treatment. We think that hemorrhoids in the pediatric age group can be treated with a good conservative method without the need for surgical intervention.
