Abstract

Objective: To investigate the necessity of wound dressing with gauze or synthetic bands (SB) after circumcision.

Method: A total of 150 patients circumcised between March 2016 and August 2018 were included in the study. The data of the patients in the institutional database were evaluated retrospectively. Three groups of patients were examined in parallel with these data Groups 1 and 2 included patients whose wound dressings after circumcision were performed with SB and gauze, respectively. Group 3 included patients whose wounds after circumcision were dressed only with antibiotic ointment. Infection, bleeding, pain and other complications were evaluated and compared among groups.

Results: There were 60 patients in Group 1, 30 patients in Group 2 and 60 patients in Group 3. There was no bleeding requiring intervention after circumcision in all groups. At the time of undressing, 5% of the patients in Group 1 and all of the patients in Group 2 had severe pain. In addition, in one patient in Group 1, and three patients in Group 2 had bleeding requiring compression after the dressing was removed. In Group 1, there was a statistically significant correlation between the length of stay of dressing and the development of infection (p<0.001).

Conclusion: In our opinion, dressing with gauze or synthetic tape is not necessary after circumcision. Dressings should be kept for a maximum of two days if SB was used for dressing.
