Abstract

Lower urinary tract (LUT) and rectum share a common embryological origin. On the other hand, their autonomic and somatic nervous innervations have close similarities. The anatomical neighbourhood of these two systems also commonly leads to a collateral effect when one of them have a dysfunction. Constipation and LUT dysfunctions may be frequently seen together or separately in children.

This review covers the anatomy of pelvic floor structures, neuroanatomy of LUT and anorectum, the mechanisms of urination and defecation, description of constipation and its pathophysiology, treatment, and finally the effects of constipation on bladder functions.
