Abstract

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most common bacterial infections observed in children. Recurrence within 6-12 months after the first infection is very common especially in girls. Formerly vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) and recently daytime incontinence and dysfunctional elimination syndrome (DES) were held responsible fort his recurrence. Nowadays individual approach based on risk factors is approved. Abnormal voiding pattern observed in children with enuresis, hyperactive bladder, inappropriate pelvic base contractions and external sphincter resistance, increase in voiding pressure, and residual urine due to insufficient voiding predispose to recurrent UTIs, have negative impact on the presence and severity of VUR, anda re risk factors for permanent kidney injury. This article focuses on the urinary tract infection in neurologically normal children with voiding dysfunction and its relation to VUR.
