Abstract
Objective: We aimed to research pediatric surgery dissertations and their contributions to the literature.
Materials and methods: All pediatric surgery dissertation written between January 1, 2010 and January 01, 2021 in the Turkish National Thesis Center were examined. The subject of the dissertations, the number of citations and impact factors were investigated. Dissertations are divided into two groups in 2010-2014 and 2015-2020, respectively.
Results: A total of 238 pediatric surgery dissertations were written over 11 years. In 2012, 33 (13.9%) dissertations were written. There were 100 experimental (42%) and 138 (58%) clinical studies. Of the clinical studies, 44 (31.8%) were prospective studies and 94 (68.2%) were retrospective studies. As scientific articles, 63 (26.5%) theses were published in various journals. 37/63 of them have been published in Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-E), 8/63 international peer-reviewed journals and 18/63 peer-reviewed domestic journals. SCI-E published 22/37 (59.5%) were experimental. When the two groups were compared, there was no significant difference in terms of experimental and clinical studies, while the rate of publication was higher in dissertations made before (p<0.05).
Conclusion: There is no difference in the distribution of dissertations topics over the years. The rate of publication of dissertations in scientific journals has decreased in recent years. Clinical studies are more, but experimental studies are more accepted to SCI-E journals. Current medical change and development could not be reflected in pediatric surgery dissertations topics.
