Abstract

Aim: The objective of this study is to document the incidence and treatment of meatal stenosis and prepucial adhesions after neonatal circumcision

Material and Method: 1050 newborns have been circumcised between 2004 and 2007 in our hospital by the Gomco Clamp technique. Among these, the ones who come to our pediatrics clinic in the last six months, were evaluated either for a meatal stenosis or penile adhesions by a single pediatric surgeon.

Results: 630 of the 1050 children were admitted to our clinic in the last 6 months for either routine pediatrician exam or other purposes. Among these, there were 2 meatal stenosis, 97 prepucial mucosal adhesions and 2 skin bridges. Meatoplasty was performed for one of the meatal stenosis, and the other one was resolved after dilation programme. 67 of the penile adhesions were younger than 1 year old, 29 of the adhesions were between 1 and 2 years of age, and there was only one adhesion after 3 years. All of the mucosal adhesions were simply lysed manually. The skin bridges were cut surgically.

Conclusion: Penile adhesions develop after newborn circumcision, they can easily be treated and they decrease with age. Meatal stenosis is not a common complication after newborn circumcison in the first three years of life. To continiue to this study on the older children after the toilette training, with a better comminication, will help to claim this conclusion.
