Abstract

Posterior urethral valves (PUV) is defined as membranous folds within the lumen of the posterior urethra which causes bladder outlet obstruction. PUV is the most common cause of urinary tract obstruction in the male newborns, and obstructive chronic kidney disease (CKD) in children.

Initial postnatal management of the patients with established or suspect diagnosis of PUV includes stabilization of the patient and drainage of the urinary tract.

Cystoscopy confirms the diagnosis. Thanks to the advances in surgical technique and instruments, as minimally invasive surgical alternative, primary retrograde valvular ablation during cystoscopy is the preferred, and the best initial surgical treatment of PUV. This procedure provides more improved preservation of bladder functions, and also decreases the need for subsequent surgical intervention.
